Jean Paul Gaultier spring summer 2012 — Jean Paul Gaultier is a French haute couture fashion designer. Gaultier was the creative director of Hermès from 2003 to 2010. In the past, he has hosted the television series Eurotrash. Jean Paul Gaultier gave a wonderful and loving tribute to Amy Winehouse for his spring/summer 2012 haute couture show this afternoon – looks entitled “Brit Award”, “Victoria’s Secret In My Bag” and “Love Is a Losing Game” were worn by girls with tumbling, strapped-up beehives and the late singer’s trademark Forties brooding moll looks with her unmistakeable flicked-up eyeliner and shiny sky-high wedges.
Jean Paul Gaultier spring summer 2012 clothes, meanwhile, honoured Gaultier’s own signatures: wonderful corsetry and beautiful long trench coats, all in unexpected colours: pink, gold and chartreuse. As ever with this famously – and lovably – eccentric Frenchman, it bordered on the level of good taste but he made it look brilliant. Long sequinned jackets were teamed with tiny girdle shorts and beautiful suiting featured corsetry detailing – one was edged in scarlet on sheer tulle. Another back-to-front polo shirt dress appeared in ivory sequins, another lace evening gown in fluorescent orange was fit for a true diva. There was, as ever, one idea piled upon another, before all the girls appeared for the finale in lace mourning mantilla veils.
What brought Gaultier immense success was the advent of his haute couture line in 1997. Through this collection, he was able to freely express the scope and range of his aesthetic, drawing inspiration from radically divergent cultures, from imperial India to Hasidic Judaism. As a result of this success, Hermès hired Gaultier as creative director from 2003 to 2010. Hermes took a 30% stake in Jean Paul Gaultier in 2003 and later increased their stake to 45%. In early 2012, he launched her collection Jean Paul Gaultier spring summer 2012.
Labeled an enfant terrible early on, he has designed collections based on Hasidic Jews and the sealskins of Inuits and showed T-shirts emblazoned with a crucified Christ. With his spiky bleached-blond hair and MTV-generation antics (he once sent disapproving editors live turkeys), he’s cultivated a flamboyant public persona that was magnified when he co-hosted the nonsensical show Eurotrash in the nineties.
