Red carpet dresses – MERYL STREEP and Michelle Williams scooped 69th Golden Globe Awards at 15th January 2012 for their portrayals of two of the most iconic women of the 20th Century. Streep’s depiction of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady scooped the Best Actress in a Drama award, whilst Williams took home the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy prize for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn.

George Clooney received the Best Actor in a Drama award for his part in The Descendants, which also won Best Picture in the Drama category. The Best Musical or Comedy Picture went to critics’ favourite The Artist, whose leading man, Jean Dujardin, took home the Best Actor gong in the same category. Legendary director Martin Scorsese was a surprise winner for whimsical children’s tale Hugo, whilst fellow director Woody Allen was awarded the screenplay prize for Midnight in Paris. Big name television award winners included Kate Winslet, Clare Danes, Matt LeBlanc and Kelsey Grammer – as well as British period drama Downton Abbey, which won Best Miniseries or Movie.

Sure it’s fun to spend hours in hair and making up and take weeks to pick out that perfect dress, but there’s something to be said about putting on your sweatpants and slippers and watching the awards at home.
